Downtown La Jolla

April 2003

so this morning i was supposed to have a dermatologist appointment. so I get all the way down to downtown la jolla (okay, so it took all of 10 minutes to get there, no biggie) and then I get to the dermatologists office and 'oh by the way, we don't take insurance anymore', meaning i'd have to try and get reimbursement from the insurance company myself where they only cover about half rather than the ten dollar co-pay for doctors "on the plan".

So I decided to schedule an appointment with a different dermatologist. But since i'd already spent the no more than 10 minutes driving into downtown la jolla I decided I might as well do something to make it worth my time. I took a walk for a few blocks, then decided I wanted to go to the beach and decided to move my car closer to the beach before I lost my car and I went over the 2 hour limit anyway. I moved it a whole 3 blocks closer I think. and the thing was, I could *see* the ocean from there. I was so close.

Yet you couldn't get there from where I was. see, I was parked outside some church, and across the street was the museum of contemporary art which took up the entire block with no way to get *through* it to the other side where i could see a beach front street. Well, after walking halfway down the block I found a sidewalk that cut through to the other side, so I made it to the beach and all.

I sat on the cliffs for a while and read like two pages of psych. Mostly I just drew. I really want a little spiral bound sketch book though. I keep doodling in my paper journal cuz it's a nice size, but the lines bug me when i'm doodling and they get in the way when you scan in the art anyhow. But I didn't like the paper in the only kind they had at longs. I want normal thick white paper, not like watercolor paper.

So anyway, on my way back from the beach I decide to stop at the museum gift shop. I mean, it would be neat to see the museum, but the gift shop is free (well, aside from the inevitable wanting a souvenir. I found some really neat but expensive books that are now on my amazon.com wishlist that someday when i'm rich and famous I'll buy and be able to spend more than 10 minutes flipping through them.

Yes, I did have to get a souvenir though. I ended up getting these neat gel shapes (the pack i got was groovy flowers) that you can stick on smooth surfaces like windows or glossy paint. They reminded me of handey. remember those gel hands that you swing at the window by the "arm" and they stick? It's pretty much the same material only slightly less stretchy.

When I got home I put them on the window to see the light shining through them. But I figure there's probably some cc&r against having anything "colorful" in the windows, so I ended up deciding to decorate my mirror with them and not see if i can piss off the guy whose window faces right into mine. I mean, i don't like looking at his shelf with a half naked movie movie boxes any more than he probably likes looking at my dolphin poster.

I actually ended up really liking the flowers on the mirror. just feels so much more personality and all. here's the flowers on the mirror with some neat reflection on my dresser from the flowers. And then I got another shot that shows almost my whole room with some cool lighting on gel shapes themselves. They just glisten there. And if you look closely you'll notice my room is obnoxiously clean right now. I was getting so carried away cleaning I almost forgot to go to class tonight.

I think that's my latest obsessive compulsive thing--keeping my room obnoxiously spotless clean. I can't think unless it's clean, and there's no way i'm gonna study here for my "practice" 101 midterm on friday unless my room is spotless. Actually though, keeping my room spotless is also a control thing. It's something I CAN control. I can't undo a lot of other stuff, but mess i can undo.

So anyway, for lunch i also got a chicken sandwich with a salad before i came home. if i'm gonna go somewhere i don't normally go, i might as well get something other than rubio's or summit pizza to eat, right? They have so much variety down there in la jolla proper, it's nice, real nice. (man, i feel like i got up early to have gotten in a whole days worth of activities and entertainment and still got home at the time i normally have lunch. Maybe I should do this more often.
