A few weeks ago, after a trip to the Douglas Blvd. Party City in Roseville to get some party supplies (that location is much larger than the one in Folsom) we decided to check out the nearby Maidu Regional Park, which is only a few blocks away. Maidu is the name of the native tribe that once lived in this area.
Maidu Park includes a Roseville branch library, community center, sports complex, skate park, and of course, a playground. This playground is definitely distinctive–it has an old western theme that is much more in depth than the Folsom City Lions Park as well as a lot of universally accessible features, as well as a couple not-so-universally-accessible features.
Location: 1550 Maidu Drive Roseville, CA 95661
Bathrooms: Yes, but expect a walk
Play area Turf: Rubber turf, sand, bark
Swings: Yes (chair & regular)
At the very front of the park is a long narrow sand-play area, with two small “mining cars” and a sand-play table similar to the lions park, with a pleasant amount of shade in the late morning.
Behind the sand area is a universally accessible old-western town. The second floors are just facades, there are no climbing areas here, however the tall buildings and roofs do provide some shade from the hot summer sun.
Pictured here is the Hotel and Train Station buildings, with a general store and unlabeled building (perhaps a house) across the “street”:
And here you can see the Jail, some of the accessible activity boards, and a portion of the “train-tracks”:
There is, of course, a train, which has a climbing tunnel inside, and lightly fenced train-tracks to give it a more authentic feel.
There are also swings: two chair swings (no buckles), and two big-kid swings; a horse rocker, spinning seat, and a toddler slide structure that looks like a covered wagon.
And last but not least, a Maidu fort-maze. The top of the fence was about the same height as the top of my 2 year old’s head, but easy for a five year old to see over.
